Q and A

I bet you have plenty questions. I know I did before my first session as ‘the one in the chair’. I’ll admit to you, although I had been told it was going to be a relaxing and enjoyable experience, I was just a bit unsure, and, well, nervous.

So, I do know. I do.

As well as this page, you may find these useful:

Many people ask me what does it feel like?

To be honest with you, I only know what it feels like for me. But I can guarantee all of us (clients and practitioners) who have experienced hypnotherapy pretty much say the same things.

I hope for you it’s like dreaming a vivid dream where anything is possible for you. A space where you’re thoughts are calm, clear and very focused. Most people, including myself and I hope you too, experience deep relaxation.

What sort of information do you need to know?

I want to know as much relevant information as I can so that I can understand  and meet your needs, but I also do realise that there may be some information which you may choose not to give and that is perfectly fine. All the information you do offer is treated in the strictest of confidence in line with my professional code of conduct.

What can I use hypnosis for?

Anything you like is the short answer. It can help you to get over thoughts, feelings and habits which are holding you back in life and even physical illnesses too; weight management, stopping smoking, fears, anxiety, confidence, manage pain, exam nerves and IBS are only a few areas where hypnotherapy can help to create change.

Please click here for a more detailed list.

I want you to continue to move forward after your session with me so you will also receive a  complimentary CD to help you to continue the great work you have already started.

Is there anything it doesn’t work for?,

Please don’t expect to be 6ft if you’re only 5ft, that sort of thing.

When will I feel a difference?

I would expect you to feel some difference straight away, but again everyone is different.

Some people notice dramatic change as soon as the session is finished, for others it can happen at a later time.

How many sessions will I need?

Again it will depend on you own situation. You may find you achieve what you want after only one session, but if you need to find the cause of why you carry on with an unwanted habit then this may take longer.  We can discuss this fully at your first session.

What do doctors say about hypnotherapy?

Doctors are starting to understand that hypnotherapy has a great deal to offer in helping people to gain better health.

It’s astonishing to know that about 90% of all GP appointments are stress related in some way or another. Hypnotherapy is a great, long lasting way to deal with stress, it is not invasive and supports more traditional medicine.  Some doctors are already using hypnotherapy to help their patients in many areas of their practice and many dentists also recognise the huge benefits hypnotherapy has to offer their patients. You probably know someone  who has been hypnotised by their dentist helping them to relax.

In fact both the Council of Mental Health of American Medical Association and the British Medical Association stated in the 1950’s that hypnotherapy is completely safe and what’s more it has no harmful side effects. It was even suggested  by the British Medical Association in 1955 that hypnotherapy should be taught in medical medical schools. The benefits of hypnotherapy in relation to irritable bowel syndrome has been recognised by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).

Will I be made to do stupid things?

No. You must have watched a stage hynotherapist at work. No, you will not be made to do anything let alone made to do anything stupid. My job is to help you achieve what you want for your own good and you are always, always  in control so you will not do anything you don’t want to. There is a massive difference between stage and clinical hynotherapy,

What’s the difference between your hypnosis and hypnosis on the telly?

The telly or stage hypnotherapists on  are passionate about what they do and have their place in the world of entertainment.

They have a totally different aim from clinical hypnotherapy: their aim is to cause amazement and ‘entertainment’. People on these programmes choose to take part, they are not forced or made to.  If the stage hypnotist gave a totally ‘off the wall’ suggestion, say he asked the person for their bank details the person would choose not to respond.

Clinical hypnotherapy is different in that it is never ever used to entertain, it is only used to assist healing, personal growth and positive change.

How do I find a good hypnotherapist?

Word of mouth is by far the best way, and also talking to clinical hypnotherapists. I would also say that it is worth while checking out qualifications.

You want a hypnotherapist who is trained in all aspects of hypnotherapy including both suggestion hypnotherapy and analysis, meaning that, if need be they can help you to find the cause of your barrier and help you to resolve this.

It is also useful to ask about their training; I would suggest very strongly that you stay clear of those who have completed long distance training in hypnotherapy. He/she will not have experienced hypnosis first hand themselves during their training nor have had comprehensive practcal support.

Please don’t be afraid to ask them about their training; you are after all making a very important decision.

You can also check whether your therapist is registered with any of the following organisations which aim to protect the public and promote continual training:

  • National Society of Professional Hypnotherapists
  • General Hypnotherapy Register
  • Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council
  • Hypnotherapy Association
